Bharatiya Janata Party leader Gudur Narayan Reddy is scheduled to release his film Razakar – The Silent Genocide of Hyderabad this week.
The Razakar mainly focuses on the actions of Muslim militias known as Razakars who engaged in looting and violence that led to the annexation of the state by the Indian Army on 17 September 1948.
The film’s promotional material drew criticism for its depiction of caste dynamics, particularly its depiction of a Brahmin boy who was allegedly impaled as Razakar looked on from a distance.
It aims to present a story highlighting anti-Hindu violence in the former state of Hyderabad, with scenes depicting Razakar’s assault and disrespect of Hindus and dialogues advocating religious conversion, expulsion or execution.
Razakar Movie follows the trend of right-wing Hindutva stories gaining popularity in the North, with films such as The Kashmir Files and The Kerala Story achieving great success despite low production costs. Similarly, Article 370 has recently seen moderate success.
In a first of its kind propaganda from the Telugu industry, the makers claim that Razakar Movie will rank among the top 10 films worldwide.
However, its reception among the Telugu audience remains shaky with weak advance bookings indicating mixed expectations.
Whether it will resonate with southern audiences and repeat the box office success that such films have had in the north remains to be seen.
